A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the jailing of Bidisha Ershad, ex-second wife of the late president and Jatiya Party founder Hussain Muhammad Ershad, in a fraud case filed with Gulshan police station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order after a hearing on Wednesday afternoon.

Gulshan police arrested Bidisha from the Gulshan area at about 8:30pm on Tuesday in connection with the case.

Gulshan police station officer-in-charge Daud Hossain said that Bidisha had been sentenced to two years in jail in the fraud case filed in 2008 and that an arrest warrant had been pending against her.

On May 20, another Dhaka court sentenced Bidisha to two years in jail and fined her Tk 10,000 in the case. The court also issued an arrest warrant against her after she was tried in absentia.

Businessperson AKM Mosarraf Hossain Sikder filed the case with Gulshan Police Station in 2008, accusing Bidisha of fraud in connection with the sale of a flat at President Park in Baridhara.

According to the first information report, Mosarraf paid Tk 75 lakh out of the agreed Tk 80 lakh to Razzaque, a close friend of Bidisha, on July 10, 2001, to purchase the flat. The flat was scheduled to be handed over on July 10, 2002.

As the flat was not handed over, Bidisha later offered to return the money. On May 2, 2005, she allegedly gave Mosarraf a Tk 75 lakh cheque from First Security Islami Bank through her manager. The cheque was subsequently dishonoured, according to the complaint.

The complainant also alleged that he received threats when he attempted to recover the money.
