Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said there is no alternative to an independent, responsible and strong media for establishing sustainable democracy.

“Democracy will be strengthened if the media is strengthened. However, not only the government but also media owners, journalists and state institutions must collectively play their respective responsible roles to build an effective democratic environment,” he said.

The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Role of Media in Sustainable Democracy”, organised by the Television Editors Council at a city hotel.

Fakhrul said democracy is not merely an electoral system; rather, it is a culture.

“Therefore, tolerance, respect for differing opinions and democratic practices must be strengthened to establish sustainable democracy,” he said.

He said democracy cannot stand on a strong foundation unless various state institutions are strengthened.

“Revealing the truth is the media’s greatest responsibility. Therefore, journalists must remain committed to publishing truthful and objective news,” he said highlighting the need to ensure professional security, fair salaries and benefits for journalists, along with an environment in which they can work independently.

The minister said building strong institutions and fostering a democratic culture are essential for making democracy sustainable.

“If freedom of expression, tolerance and responsibility are practised more widely, the media will be able to play a more effective role. At the same time, by providing truthful and objective news, the media will gain public trust and further strengthen democracy,” he added.

As the keynote speaker at the seminar, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said the July Mass Uprising had opened up new possibilities for the country.

He said the media could play an important role in building a bridge of trust between the government and the people by utilising this opportunity.

He added that establishing effective coordination among the government, media owners and advertisers would further strengthen the role of the media.

The seminar was chaired by Television Editors Council Convener Dr Abdul Hai Siddique.

Among others present were Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, and editors, senior journalists and representatives of various media organisations.
