Border Guard Bangladesh on early Friday morning foiled another alleged attempt by the Indian Border Security Force to push five people into Bangladesh through the Dhala border in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila.

With the latest incident, the BGB and local residents have foiled at least 72 such alleged attempts by the BSF since early May, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the recent West Bengal polls, according to BGB officials.

Lieutenant Colonel Rashed Kamal Rony, commanding officer of Kushtia Battalion 47 BGB, said that members of the BSF’s 11 Battalion from Buripota Camp attempted to push five unidentified people into Bangladesh from an area about 150 yards inside India.

‘BGB personnel immediately resisted the attempt and foiled the push-in,’ he said.

Following the incident, the five people remained near the barbed-wire fence along the border, while BGB personnel took up heightened positions in the area. Local residents also remained alert and assisted the border guards, according to local people.

Dhala BGB Camp Commander Naik Subedar Nizam Uddin Shikdar said that the BGB was maintaining strict vigilance along the border.

‘Under no circumstances will anyone be allowed to enter Bangladesh illegally. Our members are maintaining vigilance, and local residents are also assisting us,’ he said.

Local residents said that attempts to push people into Bangladesh had previously been made through several points along the Gangni border. Such attempts were thwarted by BGB personnel and local residents, they said.

The latest incident has prompted increased vigilance along the border, particularly around the Dhala area.

Lt Col Rashed said that the overall border situation remained normal and BGB personnel were performing their duties with the highest level of alertness.

According to police and BGB officials, at least 2,366 people, including 126 Indian nationals, have been pushed into Bangladesh from India since May 7, 2025.
