Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister of Bangladesh, whose government was toppled amid a student-mass movement that forced her to flee to India in August 2024, is scheduled to address a virtual press conference in New Delhi on August 5.

The press conference will be held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in New Delhi at 6:00pm Indian time, according to several Indian newspapers, including The Hindu.

When contacted, FCC president Waiel SH Awwad confirmed the event to New Age.

‘This will be an online interaction only. She will not be present physically or appear on video. She is not allowed by the Indian government to participate in a video interview,’ Awwad said.

Asked whether the FCC had obtained formal approval from the Indian government to host Hasina in a live audio interaction, Awwad replied, ‘No.’

Awwad said Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, would attend the event as the keynote speaker. Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan and former diplomat Aminul Hoque Polash will also join the progrmme virtually.

Former minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel would be among those attending the event in person, Awwad added.

Reports about Hasina’s press conference came amid Indian media reports suggesting that the Indian government had informed a parliamentary committee that it would not permit Hasina to engage in political activities from Indian territory.
