US special envoy to South and Central Asia Sergio Gor arrived in Dhaka this afternoon on a three-day visit.

During the visit, Sergio is scheduled to meet prime minister Tarique Rahman and foreign minister Khalilur Rahman, as well as visit Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.

On Thursday, US ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen welcomed Sergio in a Facebook post.

‘I am delighted to welcome to Bangladesh my friend, the US special envoy to South and Central Asia Sergio Gor. His visit will strengthen US–Bangladesh strategic ties and regional security and economic cooperation,’ he wrote.

According to diplomatic sources in Dhaka and Washington, US is expected to press Bangladesh for full compliance with the recently concluded Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, particularly provisions relating to digital platforms.

However, the foreign minister on Wednesday said there was no pressure regarding ART implementation.

‘We aren’t feeling any pressure,’ he said.

Foreign ministry officials said discussions during the meetings will cover digital platforms, ART implementation, migration, and a range of regional and bilateral issues.

As Sergio also serves as the US ambassador to India, the current state of Dhaka–New Delhi relations is also expected to feature prominently in the talk.
