The three judges of International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Tuesday announced that they would visit alleged secret detention centres at the DGFI headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment and RAB-1 headquarters in Uttara as part of proceedings in enforced disappearance cases.

A number of cases over alleged enforced disappearances are currently pending before the tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood and retired District Judge Md Mohitul Haque Anam Chawdhury.

Tribunal chairman Justice Mozumder disclosed the decision in open court on Tuesday in the presence of chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam and other prosecutors.

He told the chief prosecutor that the date and time of the visits would be fixed later.

According to tribunal sources, the chief prosecutor and members of the prosecution team will accompany the judges during the visits.

The tribunal has heard testimony from alleged victims of enforced disappearances describing their experiences in what they said were secret detention centres. The planned inspections are intended to allow the judges to directly observe the locations referred to during the proceedings.

The cases relate to allegations of enforced disappearances committed during the Awami League government’s tenure under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was removed from office on August 5, 2024, following a mass uprising.
