The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka over the killing of a youth during the 2024 mass uprising.
The High Court bench of Justice Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted Khairul bail.
Following the bail order, there is no legal bar to Khairul Haque’s release from jail in connection with this case.
He was earlier granted bail in seven cases and his bail was upheld by the Appellate Division.
According to the case statement, victim Khobaib, 20, was killed on August 5, 2024 when law enforcement officials and members of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated bodies opened fire on peaceful protestors under the Jatrabari overpass.
The victim’s brother, Zobayer Ahmed, filed the case on November 16, 2024, naming 80 accused, including Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and Obaidul Quader.
Khairul was shown arrested in the murder case on May 23.
On May 17, the High Court directed authorities not to show him arrested or harass him in any case where he was not specifically named as an accused.
He was arrested on July 24, 2025 at his Dhanmondi residence by the Detective Branch of police and later sent to jail in connection with another July case filed with the Jatrabari police station over the killing of teenager Abdul Kaiyum Ahad. He has remained in custody since then.
Senior advocates Md Munsurul Haque Chowdhury, Md Motaher Hossain Sazu and Syed Ahmed Raza, along with advocate Md Jahangir Hossain, appeared for the petitioner.
Deputy attorney general Syeda Nazia Sermin represented the state.
