The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday sentenced Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president and former minister Hasanul Haq Inu to 30-year imprisonment after finding him guilty of crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
The three-member tribunal, headed by retired High Court judge Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, convicted Inu on charges of conspiracy, torture, incitement and superior command responsibility for the violent crackdown on anti-government protesters.
The tribunal awarded separate prison terms on in three charges and ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning Inu would need to serve a maximum of 10 years in jail.
The verdict was delivered after the tribunal had concluded hearings on May 14 and kept the case under consideration for judgement.
The tribunal chairman delivered operative part of the verdict stating that the accused, Hasanul Haq Inu, is hereby convicted under charge no 3 for causing grievous injuries and torture to witness Raisul Haq and other victims, and for persecution on political grounds, punishable under Sections 3(2)(a), 3(2)(g), 4(1), 4(2), 20(2) and 20A of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973, and is sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment.
Under charge no 6, the accused is convicted of conspiracy, instigation and complicity in crimes against humanity, punishable under Sections 3(2)(a), 3(2)(g), 4(1), 4(2), 20(2) and 20A of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973, and is sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, along with payment of Tk 100,000 as compensation.
Under charge no 7, the accused is convicted of conspiracy and agreement to commit crimes against humanity, punishable under Sections 3(2)(a), 3(2)(g), 4(1), 4(2), 20(2) and 20A of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973, and is sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, along with payment of Tk 100,000 as compensation.
The accused is acquitted of charges no 1, 2, 4 and 5, as well as all counts under charge no 8.
Inu smiled after hearing the verdict while standing in the dock.
