Jahangirnagar University authorities have expelled two female students for two years after an investigation found them involved in storing and consuming narcotics in a women’s dormitory, university officials said on Tuesday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the university’s highest policymaking body, the syndicate, which concluded on early Tuesday and was chaired by JU vice-chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, registrar ABM Azizur Rahman told reporters.
The students, identified as Tanuza Tithi, a student of the management studies department from the 51st batch, and Sanzida Amir Enisi, a student of the drama and dramatics department from the 48th batch, were also permanently expelled from their residential hall.
University authorities additionally recommended that a case be filed against Tithi under state law, considering severity of the offense.
The disciplinary action followed an investigation into an incident at Room 116 of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, where hall authorities recovered cannabis, liquor, and other injectable ‘unknown’ liquid drugs during a raid on April 18, 2026.
According to the investigation committee, the two students violated the university’s Discipline Ordinance-2018, which strictly prohibits the possession, consumption or trade of any domestic or foreign narcotic substances on campus, in academic departments and institutes, and in residential halls.
Based on the findings, the university’s disciplinary board recommended a two-year expulsion from academic activities and permanent removal from university housing for both students, the registrar said.
