The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Sunday allowed investigators to interrogate former Awami League minister Dipu Moni, former Ekattor Media Limited managing director Mozammel Haque Babu and former Ekattor Television chief reporter Farzana Rupa for one day each in a crimes against humanity case over the killings linked to the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Square in Motijheel in 2013.
The two-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, directed investigators to complete the interrogations by August 10 .
The case was scheduled for the submission of the investigation report on Sunday.
However, the prosecution sought additional time to complete the probe, and the tribunal granted the request, setting August 10 for the submission of the report.
Supreme Court lawyer ABM Hamidul Mishbah has represented the journalists.
Among the accused produced before the tribunal were — Dipu Moni, former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque, Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee president Shahriar Kabir, retired major general Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque, former deputy inspector general of police Mollah Nazrul Islam, journalist Mozammel Haque Babu and Farzana Rupa.
During the hearing, Supreme Court senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna informed the tribunal that Shahriar Kabir was unable to move without assistance and requested that he be provided with a wheelchair.
Other accused in the case include ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former inspectors general of police Hasan Mahmud Khandker and Benazir Ahmed, and Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker, all of whom remain absconding.
Chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam earlier said that investigators have so far identified 58 people who were killed in incidents surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Square in May 2013.
According to the prosecution, the victims were identified through investigations conducted in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Cumilla and Chattogram.
The case concerns allegations of crimes against humanity arising from the crackdown on the Hefazat gathering at Shapla Square in May 5–6, 2013.
