Bangladeshi villagers held a member of Indian Border Security Force on Wednesday morning after he, along with another fellow personnel, trespassed into Bangladeshi territory along the Chapainawabganj border.

The detainee, Ganesh Murti, 43, a senior constable of BSF’s 71 battalion, stationed at the Nurpur camp, was handed back to Indian authorities following a flag meeting between the two border forces, said Lieutenant Colonel Fahad Mahmud Rinku, commanding officer of 53-BGB battalion in Chapainawabganj.

He said that Bangladeshi villagers chased and detained Ganesh in a drunken state with his weapon and ammunition after he along with another BSF personnel crossed the border into Bangladesh through the Narayanpur-Satrashia border area under the 53-BGB battalion while chasing a goat at around 6:50am on Wednesday.

On information, a patrolling team of Jahurpur Border Outpost rescued Ganesh from the villagers, Fahad Mahmud Rinku said, adding that they later handed over the solider to the Indian authorities following a commander-level flag meeting.

‘The BGB has strongly protested against the illegal intrusion during the flag meeting,’ he added.
