14 killed in lightning strikes in seven districts

At least 14 people were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in seven districts of the country on Sunday.

In Gaibandha, five people, including two teenage boys, were killed in Sundarganj, Saghata, and Phulchari upazilas this afternoon.

The deceased were Fuad, 14, son of former Dhopadanga Union Parishad chairman Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Rafi, 15, son of Chhoton Mia, and Mizan, 20, all residents of Dakkhin Dhopadanga village in Sundarganj; Nombar Ali, 65, of Helencha village in Saghata; and Manik Hossain, 22, a resident of Phulchari.

In Thakurgaon, two people, including a woman, were killed in Pirganj upazila.

The incidents took place in the Koshadangipara and Niamatpur areas. The deceased were Ilias Ali, 37, of Koshadangipara, and Selina Akter.

Pirganj police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hakim confirmed the matter.

In Panchagarh, a tea worker was killed and two others were injured after being struck by lightning while working in a tea garden at Sonapatila village in Atwari upazila this morning.

The deceased was identified as Suhrawardy, 35.

Atwari police station OC Motiar Rahman confirmed the casualties.

In Sirajganj, two farmers were killed in Tarash and Raiganj upazilas this afternoon.

The deceased were Abdul Hamid, 50, of Betrashin village in Tarash, and Hasan Ali, 24, a resident of Mallik Chan village in Raiganj.

In Jamalpur, a farmer and a housewife were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Sadar and Melandah upazilas in the afternoon.

The deceased were Morjina Begum, 40, of Koroichora village in Melandah, and Hasmat Ali, 45, of Char Jothartopur in Sadar upazila.

Jamalpur General Hospital Assistant Director Sohanur Rahman said they were brought dead to the hospital.

In Natore, a paddy harvesting worker was killed after being struck by lightning in Singra upazila.

The incident took place at Thenga Pakuria village around 5:30pm.

The deceased was Samrat Hossain, 26, of Shahjadpur upazila in Sirajganj.

In Bogura, a farmer was killed in a lightning strike at Muchikhali village in Gabtali upazila this afternoon.

The deceased was Suman, 35, a resident of the village.
