The prosecution on Thursday submitted a formal charge before the International Crimes Tribunal against former Rajshahi mayor Khairuzzaman Liton and 37 other individuals over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 uprising in Rajshahi.

Chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam submitted the formal charges to the registrar of the international crimes tribunals.

According to the investigation report and documentary and oral evidence, the accused were allegedly involved in attacks on civilians between July 1 and August 5, 2024.

The prosecution alleged that at about 1:10pm on August 5, 2024, gunmen opened fire with shotguns and pistols in several areas of Rajshahi city. They allegedly shot dead protesters Rayhan Ali near Lobongo Restaurant at the opposite of Sheikh-er-Chak Swachha Tower, and Anjum Sakib in front of Shah Makhdum College.

Around 45 people, including Salman alias Shimul, were allegedly seriously injured in the attacks.

The prosecution said the incidents took place in Sheikh-er-Chak, in front of Shah Makhdum College, along the Padma River embankment, Alupotti intersection and adjoining areas under Boalia police station.

It said that the evidence prima facie established offences under Sections 3(2)(a), (f), (g) and (h), read with Section 4 of the 1973 Act. The offences are punishable under Sections 20(2) and 20A of the Act.

The prosecution said the attacks formed part of the widespread and systematic crimes against humanity allegedly committed against unarmed students and civilians across Bangladesh during the July uprising.

It prayed that the tribunal take cognizance of the formal charge under Section 9(1) of the Act and put the 38 accused on trial.

The prosecution also sought the maximum punishment under the law if they are found guilty and prayed for confiscation of their properties under Section 20A and their transfer for the benefit of the victims.
