The Bangladesh government has planned to construct one lakh affordable apartments for low-income people in 58 locations, including the capital’s Korail slum, through public-private partnerships, housing and public works minister Zakaria Taher told Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday.

Replying to a question from independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana for Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, the minister said that the Detailed Area Plan 2022–2035, prepared by the Rajuk, had identified 58 locations for affordable housing projects targeting low-income groups.

He said that the proposed apartments would be built jointly by the government and the private sector to improve housing access for low-income residents.

The information was presented during the question-answer session in JS chaired by speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

The minister also said that the National Housing Authority had initiated steps to implement a phased apartment project for limited-income families on its 98-acre land at Dattapara in Tongi, Gazipur.

He added that the authority had also taken the initiative to launch another project, with financial support from development partners, to improve housing conditions for low-income people living in 37 slums in Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Barishal, Khulna, Kushtia, Mymensingh, Narayanganj City Corporation and several municipalities.

The minister, however, did not disclose the estimated cost, implementation timeline or financing mechanism for the proposed housing projects.
