Police feared conflicts between the leaders and activists of Awami League and different political parties, especially National Citizen Party and Students Against Discrimination across the country over the founding anniversary of AL on June 23.
All metropolitan police commissioners and deputy inspectors general of police in all ranges and Police Headquarters additional deputy inspector general of police for operations were asked to remain alert and take adequate security measures, according to a Police Headquarters letter issued on Thursday signed by its deputy inspector general of police for confidential Md Kamrul Ahsan.
The letter also said that a fear of clashes between leaders and activists of the AL and especially the NCP and SAD.
It said that AL leaders and activists might be aggrieved on police, if police created obstacles on their activities.
AL might hoist flags at different districts offices in the country and bring out processions openly with the founding anniversary banners, the letter said.
Khulna Metropolitan Police commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan told New Age that they had received the letter and would take additional measures, including patrolling and check posts to avoid any untoward situation marking the AL founding anniversary.
‘We have also increased our intelligence surveillance,’ he added.
Responding to a question at a briefing at Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media Centre, DMP additional commissioner for crime and operations SN Nazrul Islam said that there were different programmes throughout the year and the next big event was Ashura.
‘Besides, a political party’s founding anniversary is on June 23. We are on highest alert position. We are taking necessary measures like check posts activities, patrolling, special drives and security measures and it will continue,’ he added.
PHQ DIG confidential Md Kamrul Ahsan, however, denied to making any comment in this regard.
AL and its front bodies have increased bringing out flash processions in different places in the country, including Dhaka city and Chattogram in recent times.
On May 11, 2025, the Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government banned all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League until trial of the party and its leaders by the International Crimes Tribunal amid mounting protests led by student groups and political activists demanding ban on and trial of the party.
The then interim government also banned AL’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The party led the War of Independence in 1971.
The student-led July 2024 mass uprising forced the ouster of the Awami League government of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5 for shelter.
Almost all senior AL leaders, including the party president Sheikh Hasina, have been facing ICT cases over a genocide committed during the July uprising.
