Despite the start of negotiations between the United States and Iran following prolonged tensions and nearly two months of conflict, significant disagreements remain over several core issues. The following five conditions are the main obstacles to reaching a lasting agreement:

Nuclear Programme

The United States wants Iran to completely halt its nuclear programme. However, Tehran rejects this demand, stating that any restrictions on its nuclear activities can only be temporary, not permanent.

Uranium Stockpile

Iran currently possesses about 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of highly enriched uranium. US President Donald Trump has insisted that the entire stockpile be placed under US control. Tehran has firmly rejected this proposal.

Strait of Hormuz and Port Blockade

Iran has made it clear that restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place until the United States lifts sanctions on its ports. Washington, however, maintains that sanctions will not be eased until a final agreement is reached.

Frozen Assets

As part of a long-term deal, Iran has demanded the lifting of sanctions and the release of approximately $20 billion in frozen assets held abroad.

War Compensation

Iran has also demanded substantial compensation, claiming that the United States and Israel should pay around $270 billion for damages caused by their attacks.
