Despite not featuring in a single match during the Pakistan series, Soumya Sarkar remains firmly in Bangladesh’s plans as he was retain for the first two match of the three match ODI series against New Zealand.

Chief selector Habibul Bashar said Soumya impressed during practice, particularly against spin, reinforcing the belief that he remains an important asset for the team.

“I watched Soumya in practice, and one thing that impressed me was the way he handled off-spin. He is an important asset for the team,” Habibul said.

Soumya’s absence from the playing XI in the last series raised questions, but the selectors made it clear that competition for places and squad depth are part of building a stronger unit.

“We have a lot of matches coming up, and everyone will get opportunities. Having a player like Soumya on the bench means our team is very strong,” he added.

The panel also stressed that when opportunities are handed out, players will be given a proper run rather than being rotated in and out quickly.

“When we give someone a chance, we will give them a proper opportunity,” Habibul said.

Addressing concerns over communication with players who miss out, Habibul underlined the importance of keeping the wider squad engaged and motivated.

“We will definitely explain things to the players. Motivating players is part of a selector’s job. When someone is not playing, it is important to speak with them. Just naming the team is not our only responsibility,” he said.

“Our thinking has to include a pool of 25 to 30 players so that everyone stays motivated,” he added.
