Nearly 20 people were killed daily on average in road accidents across Bangladesh between March 14 and March 28 during Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals of Muslims, according to a Road Safety Foundation report published on Thursday.
At least 298 people were killed in 373 road accidents in the 15 days, it also showed.
In the same period, 41 people were killed and 209more were injured in 29 railways accidents and nine were killed, 23 were injured and two remained missing in 11 waterways accidents, the report added.
The report was prepared on the basis of news published in different media outlets, said a press release issued by the Road Safety Foundation, a non-government organisation working for passengers’ rights and safety.
The report said that as per the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and different media reports, the number of people injured in the road accidents in the period was over 2,000.
Among the fatal road crash victims, the highest number of people, 38.92 per cent, were killed in motorcycle-related accidents.
Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated in the country on March 21.
On the occasion, the government announced a seven-day holiday from March 17 to March 23.
