“Our major demand has been fulfilled. This is a big victory for us. We are returning home with the official notification in hand after achieving it through our movement. We are withdrawing our protest and returning to classrooms from tomorrow,” said Delwar Hossain Azizi, president of the Alliance for Nationalization of MPO-Listed Education and member secretary of the Bangladesh Madrasa Teachers and Employees Forum.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (21 October) afternoon at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Azizi said, “Teachers couldn’t attend classes for the past eight days. This was our fair demand. Until the annual exams, we will keep schools open on Saturdays to make up for the missed classes.”

He added, “We realized that the government doesn’t deal only with us — there are other groups of teachers, such as non-MPO, independent, and government teachers, as well as university teachers. There are also other professional groups with their own demands. From that perspective, the government requested us to come forward for discussions and solutions. We compromised on some points, and they did too. Our major demand has almost been fulfilled, Alhamdulillah. The government has issued a notification increasing our house rent allowance by 15 percent.”

Azizi further stated that the teachers’ alliance made concessions regarding the medical allowance issue, calling the development “a major victory.”

He said, “We have succeeded through our movement and are returning home with the notification. As the government has issued it following discussions, we are now withdrawing all our programs.”

During his speech, he also expressed gratitude to leaders of all political parties, including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and NCP.

Earlier, the interim government decided to increase the house rent allowance for the teachers and employees of MPO-listed (Monthly Pay Order) non-government educational institutions by 15% of their basic salary.

This 15% increment will be given to teachers and staff in two phases.

According to a notification issued by the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance, MPO-listed teachers and employees will receive a 7.5 percent (minimum Tk2,000) increase in house rent allowance from 1 November this year, and another 7.5 percent from July 2026 — bringing the total to 15 percent.
