Fakhrul, Abbas, 104 others exempted in two separate cases

Two Dhaka courts on Monday exempted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas along with 104 others from two separate cases filed with Ramna and Shahbagh police stations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz exempted Mirza Fakhrul and 76 others after accepting the final report of the case from Shahbagh Police Station.

The notable other accused in this case are– BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary General Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Saiful Alam Nirob, and Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.

According to the case documents, on December 11, miscreants set fire to motorcycles and vehicles near the Bar Council in Shahbagh, just a day before the bail hearing for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case, allegedly to influence the court’s decision and pressure the judiciary.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman exempted Mirza Abbas and 28 others in a case filed with Ramna Police Station.

The other notable accused in the case include– BNP’s Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, BNP leader Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, former Chhatra Dal President Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel, General Secretary Habibur Rashid Habib, Jubo Dal’s Organizing Secretary Ishaq Sarkar, and Jubo Dal leader Hamidur Rahman Hamid.

According to the case documents, the BNP held a protest rally in the Shantinagar area under Ramna Police Station in Dhaka on March 2, 2013, demanding the reinstatement of the caretaker government system. During the protest, police and Awami League activists allegedly attacked BNP members and arrested many of them. Following the incident, a case was filed with Ramna Police Station.
