A Dhaka court has sentenced three people to life imprisonment and acquitted four others in the high-profile murder case of Italian national Cesare Tavella.
The verdict was delivered On Thursday (July 3) by Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam of Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
Those sentenced to life in prison are Tamjid Ahmed alias Rubel, Rasel Chowdhury, and Minhajul Arefin alias Bhagne Rasel.
The four who have been acquitted are BNP leader MA Quayum, his brother Abdul Matin, Shakhawat Hossain, and Sohel.
Among the accused, Tamjid Ahmed, Rasel Chowdhury, Minhajul Arefin, Matin, and Shakhawat had previously given confessional statements before the court, admitting their involvement in the murder.
During the trial, MA Quayum and Sohel remained absconding. Matin was out on bail, while the remaining four were in custody and were produced before the court during the verdict announcement.
According to the case documents, on the evening of September 28, 2015, Cesare Tavella—an official of the Netherlands-based international development organization ICCO Cooperation—was shot dead by assailants on the footpath near the southern wall of the Governor’s House on Road 90 in Dhaka’s Gulshan area.
