BNP leader Ishraque Hossain on Tuesday announced the protest at Nagar Bhaban, which has halted all citizen services for over two weeks, will remain suspended to allow smooth Eid celebrations.
However, after Eid, if the demand for appointing Ishraque as the Dhaka South mayor remains unmet, all “outsiders” will be evicted from the Dhaka South headquarters, he threatened during a sit-in programme.
After Eid, Ishraque will bypass authorities’ approval and take oath by himself as the Dhaka South mayor with support from the people, he said.
The protest has been going on since 14 May, after a Dhaka court ordered the Election Commission (EC) to declare Ishraque as the Dhaka South mayor.
Even though, petitions were filed with the High Court and the Appellate Division, challenging Ishraque’s mayoral bid, his supporters continued blocking DSCC services claiming “the court ruled in his favour.”
Now, the Appellate Division has declared the EC has the sole mandate to take decisions over the issues raised by petitioners. The EC is awaiting the full text of apex court ruling to decide on the matter.
