Leave to appeal filed seeking stay on Ishraque’s mayoral declaration

A leave to appeal petition has been filed seeking a stay on the Election Tribunal’s verdict and the Election Commission’s (EC) gazette notification declaring BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
The petition was submitted on Monday to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division.
The hearing may take place today or tomorrow in the Chamber Court, sources said.
On 22 May, the High Court summarily dismissed a writ petition that had sought to suspend the tribunal’s verdict and the EC’s gazette. In response, the petitioner has now filed a leave to appeal against that order, seeking a halt to both the mayoral declaration and the gazette’s implementation.
