Shawdesh Desk:

The Government Titumir College students on Monday blocked Mohakhali rail crossing to meet their demand for recognition of the educational institution as an independent university.

They brought out a procession and staged a demonstration at Mohakhali rail crossing around 3:40 pm, blocking rail communication along the route.

Earlier in the day, they blocked Gulshan-Mohakhali road to press home their demand.

The blockade has brought traffic movement on the busy thoroughfare to a complete halt.

The agitating students gathered in front of Titumir college and used bamboo barricades to block the road around 12:30pm.

As part of the ongoing protest, six students have been on hunger strike for the past six days at the main entrance of the college.

Due to the road blockades, all traffic on the Mohakhali-Gulshan road and at the Mohakhali rail crossing remained at a standstill until the filing of this report around 4:45 pm.

However, emergency vehicles, including ambulances, are being allowed to pass. Notably, no law enforcement personnel have been seen at the protest site so far.

On Sunday, the protesting students announced their “Barasat Barricade to North City” and “College Shutdown” programs. As part of their movement, they have put forward three key demands:

1. Official recognition of Titumir College as Titumir University, along with the publication of its academic calendar.

2. Immediate withdrawal of the Education Advisor’s statement and assurance of international-standard higher education in all institutions, granting recognition based on merit and institutional qualifications.

3. A proper investigation into the alleged pressure exerted by the Legal Advisor on the Ministry of Education regarding the formation of the Titumir University Commission. The Legal Advisor must publicly apologize for disrupting state affairs.
